16th Hornbill International Naga Wrestling championship held at Chiechama

Dimapur, December 4: The 16th Hornbill International Naga Wrestling Championship was held at Chiechama on December 4.
Chief Guest, Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu in his short address acknowledged the Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio and his colleagues for inviting him to be witnessing a live show of the 16th Naga Wrestling Championship here in Nagaland.
He said that Northeast states are of diverse culture and tradition and every tribe is very distinctive from each other however, in terms of development he said under the leadership of our PM our entire North east has changed, progressing with different opportunities with a good platform in every field.
On sports he said Northeast is future, since we are participating now in Asian games and Olympics also, therefore urged the youths to take this opportunity and make it a career.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his greeting acknowledged the presence of the Chief Minister of Auranachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu at the 16th Hornbill International Naga Wrestling Championship and also the Nagaland Wrestling Association for emphasizing on its role of being a keen exponent of Naga Wrestling Style and for keeping alive the great legacy of our forefather.
Rio mentioned that this is the first time Hornbill wrestling is hosted outside of Kisama, and stated that it was the need of the hour to spread the festival to other venues since Kisama alone is jammed packed and too congested to host all the events.
He was also concerned with the youth on unemployment issues stating that promotion in entrepreneurship, sports and music should be emphasized more and urged the youth to excel in games, sports music etc and also propagate the importance of Naga wrestling and make it one of the popular sports thereby bringing the citizen and other National and international countries closer to each other.
He also urged to promote and protect our Naga culture, the rich traditions, our song and dance and our cuisines and look forward for the cooperation from all tribes to make it more bigger and more vibrant.
Meanwhile, Vice President of All India Traditional Wrestling Federation requested our Chief Minister to host the Asian Wrestling Championship in Nagaland in the coming years.
Advisor to CM, Abu Metha in his welcome address said, it was a significant day in the history of Chiechama village to be honoured with the presence of two Chief Ministers, two Speakers, a galaxy of celebrities, important personalities who have contributed to India’s rise. He said Cheichama village is a historic village, build in legends and their ancestors have lived off this land since times immemorial. The sons and daughters of Chiechama have made significant contributions to the journey of Nagaland and India and the village is committed to continue to contribute towards strengthening the Naga way of life, to contribute to India’s rise and its glory, he added.
The Advisor said wrestling has been part of the Naga way of life, which has brought the community closer and promote peace since the earliest times. He said sports has no language, it has one universal language to bring people together, to strive for excellence, it exemplifies the human spirit to work harder but the most importantly it unifies, likewise Naga style of wrestling have unified the Naga people. Today’s championship is not only National but International where participants from different parts of the state, the country and beyond are taking part.
The Nagaland Wrestling Association with the Nagaland Olympic Association will continue to strive for the Olympic spirit, the Olympic Motto ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius, the ambition to get stronger, jump higher, run faster and today with inclusion of new word communitor in unity, he added.
Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) President Dr. Hiabe Zeliang in his presidential note said that Hornbill International Wrestling Championship was introduced in the year 2007 organised by the Nagaland Wrestling Association as part of the Hornbill festival celebration. Naga wrestling game was recognised as the state game of Nagaland. Zeliang also said that Naga wrestling is a festival, a traditional culture where Naga people celebrate wrestling passionately than any other game. He further said that a good friendship is also develop through wrestling.
Altogether 40 wrestlers participated in the competition including wrestlers from Kyrgyzstan, and local wrestlers from Sumi, Ao and Poumai tribe.
