32 professional wrestlers will vie for championship title
Kohima, December 2: The 12th International Hornbill Naga Wrestling Championship 2018 is all set to witness on December 4, at Amphitheatre, Naga Heritage Village, Kisama with 32 professional wrestlers, 8 each from Angami Sports’ Association (ASA), Chakhesang Wrestling Association (CWA), Zeliang Wrestling Association (ZWA) and Senapati District Wrestling Association (SDWA) Manipur.
The Hornbill Naga Wrestling Championship which is organized by the Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) and sponsored by the Department of Tourism, Nagaland started way back in 2007 and was subsequently observed as an annual event. The very championship bears a unique history by extending its horizon to the other areas where other than NWA constituent units like Poumai, Ao and tourist from abroad partake and excels.
Mention may be made that, in the year 2009, 1st Naga-Korean Wrestling championship (Ssisiriuem) was also organized along with the normal championship. In view of the foreign tourist participation being observed improving, the NWA named the championship as “International Hornbill Naga Wrestling Championship” since 2015.
This year 12th edition would witness 2 categories-Professional, which would comprises of 3 NWA constituent Units (ASA, CWA, ZWA) and SDWA and the Amateur & Tourist category.
Under the Amateur & Tourist Category, invitation is extended to all wrestling enthusiasts within and outside the state for participation.
The NWA in an official disclosure stated that apart from Angami, Chakhesang, Zeliang and Poumai tribes, all other Naga tribes can partake in the Amateur & Tourist category and further added that 1 (one) wrestler each from Phom and Lotha community has already confirmed their participation under this category.
The NWA expects wrestlers from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi and other neighbouring states. The entry will be free and can be registered on spot on December 4 before 9 a.m. or can contact NWA Officials at 9612111544 for registration.
This year wrestling champion will be a new face as there are no former champion in the race for the 12th edition 2018.
The 12th edition champion will walk away with a cash prize of `1 ,00,000 while the runner up will receive a cash prize of ` 60,000. The third and fourth position holders will also pocket a sum of ` 30,000 and ` 20,000 respectively along with citations.
The best fourth wrestlers in the Amateur & Tourist category will be awarded ` 30,000, ` 20,000, `10,000 & `5,000 respectively along with citations
Meanwhile, the day long championship will be graced by Pele Khezhie, President, Nagaland Taekwondo Association & Convenor Northeast Taekwondo Association as the Special Guest.
Hukhoneyi Soho (CWA), Surhoneyi Soho (CWA), Keneigulie Nagi (ASA), Visevo Zahumo (ASA), Huvenu Phesao (CWA), Vecusuyi Chuzho (CWA), Hangcheu Zeliang (ZWA), Ekie Zeliang and Seyielhuokho (ASA) will be the referees and panel of judges of the day event.
CWA President Vezuhu Keyho will chaired the inaugural function, Native Harmony Viswema will present NWA Anthem, Rev. Iringtie Kauring, Pastor, Zeme Baptist Church, Kohima, will invokes God’s blessing, welcome note will be delivered by NWA General Secretary, Vekhozo, while Hukhoneyi, Convenor, NWA Referee Board, will administered oath to the wrestlers.
