Dimapur, January 11: Two RTI activists have alleged misuse of National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) money under Mokokchung District. Under the NFBS, in case of the death of primary bread earner of the family who is not a government employee and falls between 18 to 60 years of age, a compensation of Rs 20,000 is allotted to the deceased family which is provided through the Social Welfare Department.

Citing RTI reply from the Social Welfare Department, the two RTI activists ST Yapang Lkr and Odi Jamir, in a press release, informed that in the year 2014-15 Nagaland had 475 NFBS beneficiaries out of which 50 of them were from Mokokchung District. On finding that among all the villages under Mokokchung District, the highest beneficiaries recorded were at Chungtia village (7 beneficiaries), the release informed that ST Yapang Lkr went to Chungtia to inquire, where it was learned that the villagers did not know most of the deceased name mentioned in the record and surprisingly those whose name they knew, their beneficiaries' name were not known.

The release informed that in one case each from Unger village and Asangma village, the beneficiary had received only Rs 10,000. In Longkhum village having two cases, the villagers did not know the name of the deceased nor the beneficiaries and the villagers also claim that there were no individuals by such names in the village, the release informed.

The release also claimed that most of the beneficiaries had never heard of NPBS nor applied for any schemes/benefits, but were happy to learn that they will be receiving such benefits.

The two RTI activists, who are also Para Legal Volunteer (PLV) informed that in order to avail NFBS benefit one should first inquire whether NFBS forms are available at their Anganwadi/ICDS center and if not available write a letter to the District Welfare Officer or the Director of Social Welfare asking for detailed reasons/explanation for not providing NFBS form and avail the forms at the earliest.

The release also informed that another scheme one can avail this year is the Indira Gandhi Matriva Sahyog scheme which is now known as Pradhan Matru Vandana Yojana. This scheme can be availed by those families who are unemployed and have two children and they will receive Rs 6000. It informed that till last year it was applicable only in Kohima but now every district can avail this scheme.

For further details one can visit the department at the earliest. (Page News Service)
