SCC threatens to go to Court

Dimapur, August 12: The crucial meeting to solve the impasse between the Municipal Affairs Department (MAD) and the Sunrise Colony Council today ended without any logical conclusion as both the parties expressed divergent views.

The Municipal Affairs Department was of the view that they be allowed to install machines for solid waste management but the Sunrise Colony Council was totally opposed to it and demanded shifting of the present dumping site to elsewhere as it was affecting people's life.

The SSC even said that they would go to Court, if the dumping site was not shifted.

About the blockade, the Council said it would decide in another meeting tomorrow whether they will impose blockade again or not.

Emerging out of the meeting, the Parliamentary Secretary, Municipal Affairs, Zhaleo Rio said that the government does not want any confrontation with the colony council.

He said that as of now there was no alternative dumping site and the only one at the Sunrise Colony was catering to entire Dimapur town.

He said the government is contemplating to open more disposal sites but immediately one cannot acquire lands as people are not willing to part.

"I wish good sense prevail. We don't want to give false assurances. What is practical, what is pragmatic we have shared," he said.

The parliamentary secretary said that shifting of the dumping site now or in the near future may not be a good proposal. He said the government is planning to install solid waste management plant, which would be completed in a year's time from now.

He, however, agreed that the people of the colony have every reason to be annoyed as the government had given assurances time and again.

He also said when there is no alternative site, the question of shifting does not arise.

The meeting was attended by the officials of Dimapur Municipal Council and members of Sunrise Colony Council. (Page News Service)
