SCC blocks DMC vehicles from entering dumping site

Dimapur, August 11: Alleging that the Municipal Affairs Department has backtracked from the agreement of shifting the present dumping site of the Dimapur Municipal Council, citizens of Sunrise Colony led by council members Friday morning blocked the entry of all DMC vehicles carrying garbage to the dumping site.

As blockade was announced earlier, DMC officials, police officers and personnel from the Mahila Battalion and IRB were stationed near the colony, along with members from the Naga Council Dimapur and GBs from various colonies to persuade the colony members to allow entry of vehicles.

However, appeals made by the Naga Council Dimapur and GBs had no effect on the Sunrise Colony Council members, who were determined not to lift the blockade, come what may, unless the dumping site was shifted from the present site as per the agreement made earlier.

The confrontation between the NGOs and the Colony Council continued for hours, which also saw heated arguments between the two parties.

Interestingly, the protest by the Colony Council was also joined by school children who sat there for hours holding placards.

When persuaded further and several appeals were made by the DMC officials and police, the Sunrise Colony Council members relented, but with the condition that the Parliamentary Secretary, Municipal Affairs visit the dumping site tomorrow and have meeting with the Council members in regards to their demand.

When a written assurance was given by DMC Administrator in presence of the NGOs that the Parliamentary Secretary would visit the dumping site at 11 a.m. Saturday and later hold a meeting at Circuit House, Dimapur, the blockade was lifted at around 2.30 p.m., that too after another protest by the women group, who were not eager to lift the blockade.

When contacted, DMC Administrator, Moa Sangtam said that the matter has been resolved as of now, as the garbage trucks were allowed to pass through the colony today and as usual the DMC would dump the garbage even tomorrow.

He also said that the Parliamentary Secretary for Municipal Affairs, Zhaleo Rio is visiting the dumping site tomorrow at 11 a.m. and after that he would hold a meeting with the members of Sunrise Colony Council at Circuit House.
