Solid waste management plan launched at Chumukedima


Dimapur, September 2: The launching program of Chumukedima Town Council, Solid Waste Management Plan was held today at Chumukedima Town Council. Minister Public Health Engineering Department, Government of Nagaland, Jacob Zhimomi, flagged off a fleet of 9 sanitation vehicles to be utilized for the solid waste management plan and also launched the Chumukedima Town Council solid waste management plan official website.
Addressing the inaugural programme at Chumukedima Town Council Hall, Jacob mentioned that he was giving personal interest on the issue of waste management as one cannot ran away from it. Waste management is a pertinent subject in the entire country where even the Prime Minister is taking the lead through Swaach Bharat programmes, he added.
Jacob observed that there was no end to population growth and waste will be generated and therefore encouraged the people for construction of compost pits. As of now target given by the government is achieved for rural Nagaland, he said. He further reminded that business establishments using plastics will be penalized starting from this month. He also expressed concern about the opening of so many brick kilns without obtaining proper license from the government thereby causing environmental pollution and damaging soil fertility. Zhimomi advised the gathering to remain united and to uphold the social fabric of the Nagas.
Deputy Commissioner Dimapur encouraged the citizens of all the 11 wards of Chumukedima Town to use the solid waste management facility as their own and to make Chumukedima town more beautiful. He reminded the people to be more realistic by removing the subsidy mindset.
EAC and administrator Chumukedima Town Council, Thejavizo Nakhro in his key note address informed that under the plan a total of 9 vehicles would be going in all the colony lanes and collect waste from the door step. Another team would be collecting waste from the business establishments, he informed. He talked about the main components of solid waste management plan which aims at environmental sustainability, public service delivery system, sanitation branch management, conversion of dumping site, self sustaining operation and regulatory mechanism.
Short speeches were also delivered by Akang Aier, GB ward No.10, Ghonito Achumi, chairman ward No.5, Razouvotuo Chatsu, chairman Chumukedima village council, Niksungla Jamir, chairman Life NGO.
Earlier, Jacob Zhimomi also inaugurated and unveiled the monolith of material recovery facility and compost plant at Chumukedima A village Khopanala. He also unveiled the monolith of the renovated Chumukedima Town Hall.
