7 rebel outfits call for I-Day shutdown

KOKRAJHAR, August 11: Seven militant organizations of the northeast have jointly have called for a total shutdown in the region on Independence Day and asked the people of the region to desist from participating in the celebrations.

The outfits are Hynniewtrep National liberation Council (HNLC), Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO), Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), anti-talks National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB), National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT) and People's Democratic Council of Karbilongri (PDCK).

In a press statement, HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said celebrations on such occasions can create a false notion of enjoying political freedom in the minds of subjugated people. He added that almost all communities of Western South East Asia (WESEA) region are up in arms and an armed struggle is on.

"As a part of this continuing resistance struggle, we, the representatives of our respective revolutionary organizations, declare to ban India's Independence Day celebrations in our WESEA region. In order to successfully materialize the declaration, we call for a total shutdown of the entire region for 12 hours from 6 am on August 15," he said. He added that people of the region should do the needful to make this ban a success. (TNN)
