There are certain words that grip the imagination of humankind to the point that the promise of nations are built on their foundations. These words have powerful imageries that lull the human brain into inexplicable euphoria. These words contain so much sanguinity that they blind the human eye to realities but cannot be erased by their mere utterance and repletion. Yet throughout history, these words have created bonds in humankind and cemented human societies and states. Some of these words are democracy, liberty, equality, fraternity, freedom, sovereignty and, of course, unity. Lives have been lost in the belief and pursuit of the promises these words hold ~ for, indeed, they are worthy ideals to live by and to die for. But there are also words such as truth and justice that are inalienable from words such as democracy, liberty, equality, fraternity, freedom, sovereignty and unity. In fact, none of the promises of these words can be translated into reality without being planted firmly on the foundation of truth and justice. But what is truth; what is justice? And what exactly are democracy, liberty, equality, fraternity, freedom, sovereignty and unity? Because one person's democracy is another's dictatorship, whose definition do we accept and follow? Because one person's unity is another's bondage, whose definition do we follow? Then again, we have seen the imperfections of democracy and the distortions thereof, spawning discriminations, inequality, curbing of liberty, suppression and repression of freedoms and rights, limiting sovereignty and making a mockery of unity, so what do these words mean to us in the 21st century, which has digitalized our lives to the extent that we are only as good as the numbers we are identified and counted by? Take the word unity for instance ~ does it mean unity of thoughts and feelings? Are we all supposed to think and feel the same way about issues, about ideals, about goals, about purposes, about hopes and about aspirations? What of other, alternate, different, divergent, dissenting and divergent thoughts and feelings, ideals, goals, purposes, hopes and aspirations? Would such other, alternate, different, divergent, dissenting and divergent thoughts and feelings, ideals, goals, purposes, hopes and aspirations be accommodated in this "state of unity"? This leads to another question ~ are human races supposed to have no variances in thoughts, feelings, ideals, goals, purposes, hopes and aspirations? If so, what happens to the Free Will every human being is born with? So then what actually is God-gifted and what have been carved by human designs? Are we able to separate the two to speak with confidence about what ought to be and what ought to be done ~ as also what ought to be thought, felt, hoped and aspired? History and all Holy Books teach us numerous lessons about the conduct of human beings and collectives of human beings in the form of community, state and society but what lessons have we gained from our own realities and experiences? Do our realities and experiences tell us that the promises held in words such as democracy, liberty, equality, fraternity, freedom, sovereignty and unity are indeed true, constant and realizable? And, those who promise us these, on what plinths do they stand to make these promises and what record do they have to prove that they can deliver the promises of such words? Ah yes, the other word that is much in usage now is "development", which unfortunately seems to mean, by and large, infrastructure development. Now, where does that leave the human being, especially the least of the human beings? In the most economically and technologically advanced places anywhere in the world, the poor have been banished to the peripheries of existence but poverty has yet to be eradicated. Democracy, liberty, equality, fraternity, freedom, sovereignty and unity, someone said? And, what about truth and justice in the "state of unity"? This could ~ and would most probably ~ be misconstrued as pessimism but these thoughts are just a reminder to listen to the quiet voice that speaks to the mind, which is most alert and receptive in silence and serenity.
