Awareness on plastic ban held at Chiephobozou

Dimapur, September 18: An awareness campaign on statewide total ban on single use of plastics with effect from October 1 under Chiephobozou Sub-Division kick started at a programme held at DB’s Court, Chiephobozou on September 18. HoDs of all departments under the Sub-Division, owners of all establishments, heads of schools, pastors of churches, GBs of Chiephobozou town and all neighbouring villages attended the programme.
Exhorting the gathering, ADC Chiephobozou, Vekhoyi Chakhesang encouraged them to adopt eco friendly habits like carrying own water bottles, shopping bags, practising waste segregation and to create awareness at community level. He appealed the churches, village authorities and NGOs to take the lead in awareness creation.
Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) office secretary, Zakiekhotuo Kiso gave an awareness speech on plastic ban and enlightened the gathering on the necessity of plastic ban. He highlighted the experiences of KMC while undertaking various activities and programme on waste management so far.
Director, Earth Friendly Generation, Chiephobozou, Keduolhoukho enlightened the gathering on society’s initiatives using banana leaves to make plates and cups as an alternative of Styrofoam plates and cups. He added that it would be biodegradable and further creates employment opportunities for the local youth as well.
The awareness campaign under the sub-division will continue till September 30 and programme will be held at various locations covering all the villages under the sub-division.
To indicate the feasibility of the ban on single use of plastic, refreshments were served in banana leaves and biodegradable cups made of corn starch.
