Kohima, Aug 30: In a major disaster due to sudden flashflood, around 40 paddy fields have been destroyed in Thekrejuma village and Dzüleke village under Western Angami region of Kohima district.
According to delayed reports reaching here, SDO (C) Sechü-Zubza, Mhomo Tungoe said that the first incident occurred on August 27 night affecting at least 20 farmers in Thekrujuma village under Kohima district.
The flashflood destroyed huge stretch of paddy fields on both side of the river banks, spreading over a kilometer in distance, he said, adding that basic services like road and electricity is also disrupted but there have been no human casualties.
The SDOC(C) informed that on spot verification of the area along with Dobashis, administrative team the next day, it was found that the only bridge connecting the village over Chathe river had been washed away along with electric poles supplying electricity to the village on the night.
As per initial verification, the administration assessed about 20 affected farmers, he said while accurate assessment could not be made since they cannot cross to the other side of the river to reach the village and neither could the villagers do so due to the broken connectivity.
However, the volume of the water greatly reduced Thursday and the villagers have already constructed a foot bridge over the river, he said. The actual assessment of the damage caused is being conducted thoroughly, he said.
District Disaster Management Authority Kohima was immediately informed about the ground situation and a team of officials from agriculture department were also dispatched the next day, he said.
Thekrejuma village council chairman, Rüüngutuo Kruse informed that since the flashflood occurred from above the village, almost all the irrigation canals have been destroyed and now the water source to the paddy fields that were not affected is also a worry.
Drinking water pipes to the village were also destroyed; he said adding that they have been compelled to arrange other temporary water connection. He also informed that many domestic animals have been killed, though the actual number is yet to estimated.
It was informed that the Chathe river also provides water to Medziphema town, Medziphema village, Rüzaphema village and SASRD and some other neighbouring places. The flashfloods have affected the water connectivity to those places as it has damaged over 5 km of water connectivity.
Meanwhile, sources said that similar incident occurred at Dzüleke under Khonoma village on the same day due to the increasing volume of water in the river.
